What Is Vegan Skincare? – PlantX Canada

What Is Vegan Skincare?

Living the vegan lifestyle is more than changing your diet. Caring for the environment and animals transcends all aspects of a dedicated vegan lifestyle. Sustainable choices also affect usual household items, clothes, and even skincare.

So what exactly is vegan skincare?

Just like a vegan dish doesn’t include any animal meat or animal byproducts, vegan skincare products also forgo any animal-derived ingredients for their product formulation. That means you won’t find any beeswax, honey, collagen, lanolin, or keratin in vegan skincare products — even the ones you rarely find in skincare like carmine or silk.    Not only that, but vegan skincare manufacturers also avoid any ingredients that have anything to do with animals. For example, lanolin is a moisturizer that comes from the washing of sheep’s wool. This process is helpful in shearing the sheep so their coat won’t be too heavy, but vegan products do away with these kinds of ingredients still.

What ingredients are in vegan skincare?

Because vegan products don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients, they use plant-based and synthetic ingredients. Some tell-tale ingredients that make vegan skincare are aloe, shea butter, grapeseed extract, sunflower oil, and green tea.    To tell if what you’re buying is vegan, check the label by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). They put labels for vegan and cruelty-free products. Vegan Action and The Vegan Society also have their list of vegan-certified brands.

Is it better for your skin?

The rule of thumb is, if you recognize most of the ingredients in your skincare, there are probably fewer ingredients there that might damage your skin or clog your pores. Some animal ingredients might be too harsh for the more sensitive skin type, while plant-based ingredients like aloe will naturally soothe the skin.   Just like how plant-based food improves your gut health and mood, vegan skincare also repairs, soothes, and is milder on the skin. That is because vegan ingredients have a healthy boost of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that hydrate and repair the skin cells.    Most skincare companies pride themselves on the collagen and vitamin C content of their products, but these ingredients are also present in vegan skincare, only without the harmful synthetic and animal-based ingredients.    The healthy fats and Vitamin C in plant-based ingredients like oranges, kiwi, kale, and broccoli serve as co-factors or helper compounds, so our bodies will effectively produce collagen. This makes our skin brighter and more supple.    What’s more, our skin absorbs vegan ingredients more easily,  so you can see the benefits of your skincare routine in just a few weeks or even days.

Why you should switch to vegan skincare products

Apart from being better for your skin and health, switching to vegan skincare is also good for the planet. Animals won’t be exploited or exposed to the harmful chemicals used in farming.    It is also the more sustainable choice, as using purely plant-based ingredients will reduce the deforestation caused by the livestock industry and the air and water pollution that they produce.    Going vegan is safer for you and the planet. Make the best choice by checking the ingredients in the products you use every day.
