Alkaline water is higher on the pH scale than regular water. Because of this, alkaline water is thought to detoxify the body and help with issues such as high blood pressure and acid reflux. This means you still get all the hydration you need, plus the added health benefits alkaline water fans are raving about. So what are you waiting for? Have a browse - give your body the hydration it deserves and see what’s got everyone talking for yourself!
What makes alkaline water different from regular water?
Regular water (the kind that comes straight from the tap) is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen. That is why it is scientifically known as H2O. However, not all water has the same pH level. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. The pH level measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is; for example, something with a pH level of 1 would be very acidic whereas something with a pH level of 13 would be very alkaline.
Tap water has a PH of around 7, right in the middle of the pH scale, meaning it is balanced between acidic and alkaline. Alkaline water, however, is higher than 7 and tends to come in at around 8 or 9 on the pH scale. This is because minerals are added such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium, all of which make the water more alkaline.
How is alkaline water made?
Alkaline water can be made naturally. Water that naturally passes over rocks in a stream or waterfall often picks up minerals in the process, naturally raising its alkaline level. However, the alkaline water that we tend to buy commercially has typically been through a process called electrolysis. Electrolysis uses an ionizer to raise the pH of regular water. Electricity is used to separate the molecules in water that are more acidic or alkaline, and the acidic water is then filtered out. And, voila! What’s left behind is water with a higher alkaline level than before. Ionizer machines were first popular in Japan and other East Asian countries, in recent years they have attracted a lot of attention in the US and Europe.
Will alkaline water affect my body’s natural pH level?
Nope! The body tends to maintain a natural pH level of 7, again right in the middle of the pH scale. The things that you eat and drink only alter the pH level of your urine. So you can drink alkaline water worry-free. Plus when the alkaline water hits the stomach, the acids in your gut neutralize it and restore your body's natural balance!
Can I drink alkaline water every day?
Yes! To get all the health benefits you can from alkaline water, you need to be consuming it regularly. For regular water, it is widely known that you should be drinking at least eight glasses of water a day. This supports the body's general wellbeing and flushes out toxins. If you already do this, then you can simply switch your 8 glasses to alkaline water. However, If you do not drink this much regular water, then try drinking three to four glasses of Alkaline at first, alongside upping your regular water intake to get the full eight glasses. Do be careful not to rush the transition so your body has time to get used to the changes. Remember, slow and steady wins the race!
When should I drink alkaline water?
Here at PlantX, we recommend enjoying a glass of alkaline water first thing in the morning to get your body prepared for the day. Drinking water as soon as you wake up is a great habit as it kickstarts the metabolism, allowing your body to digest food more efficiently throughout the day.
We recommend taking small sips of alkaline water during exercise. This is because as we exercise, we tend to use up bodily fluids very quickly so we must drink to replace them. We also recommend having a big glass of alkaline water before and after your workout; this will prepare and then replenish your body's fluid levels.
