Frequently Asked Questions
What is marmalade?
Marmalade is a fruit preserve made from the peel and juice of citrus fruit.
Unlike jam, which is made from pureed fruit (such as raspberries, strawberries, or apricots) that has been boiled down with sugar, marmalade is made from the juice of citrus fruits, which is boiled together with peel, sugar, and water.
The citrus peel is what gives marmalade its distinct bitter taste. Marmalade also contains more pectin (a fibre found in fruits and vegetables) which gives it a thicker consistency than jam.
In the UK, marmalade is most commonly made from Seville oranges, due to their sharp, intense flavour. They are also richer in pectin and yield a thicker marmalade.
What is the story behind Robertson’s?
Robertson’s Marmalades date all the way back to the 19th century. First established in 1864 in Paisley, Scotland, this company has a whole wealth of history under its belt.
The company first came into being when Mrs Robertson began making marmalade in her family shop, producing a variety of delicious flavours that proved extremely popular with the locals.
Since then, Robertson’s has received a Royal Warrant, which was originally awarded by King George IV in 1933 and subsequently by King George V and Queen Elizabeth.
For decades, Robertson’s Marmalade has been associated with Paddington Bear, the UK’s favourite fictional character - he even appears on the labels!
